"William J. Adelman, 1932-2009: Teacher formed a union at school, became labor history expert
By Joan Giangrasse Kates Special to the Tribune September 21, 2009
When it came to the labor movement in Illinois, William J. Adelman was not only a fierce advocate at the ground level but also a devoted historian and preserver of its legacy.
The longtime Oak Park resident got firsthand experience helping organize fellow teachers at Morton West High School in Berwyn during the 1960s.
"He'd teach all day and then conduct union meetings at night," said his son Marc.
Mr. Adelman later became a professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago, during which time he penned a series of walking tour books on significant sites involving the labor movement in Chicago. In 1969 he also co-founded the Illinois Labor History Society in Chicago and was its vice president.
Charmcity Cross was yesterday and it was amazing..
The course was really well thought out. There were two sections of barriers, a zig zag run-through sand pit area, barrier steep steps, sharp 180 degree turns, grass, muddy grass, asphault, climbs, decents, everything.
I was dumb and missed the start by about 15 seconds which messed up my whole race but it was still amazing.
I also didnt realize my last lap was my last lap. I was ready to attack on the 7th lap but there were only 6 it turns out.
I was pretty pissed cause I know I couldve done really well. I was really prepared and felt good throughout the race (well good for cross).

"October 7th will mark the eighth year that the U.S. has been at war with Afghanistan, under the auspice of fighting “the war on terror.” In eight years under occupation, tens of thousands of Afghans have been killed by U.S. air strikes, bombs, and bullets, and the Afghani infrastructure has been devastated. In just one day of this war, May 4, 2009, U.S. air strikes killed over 150 Afghan children, women, men in a village in Farah province.
Join DC Students for a Democratic Society on October 7th and FUNK THE WAR. We'll be dancing through downtown DC to raise a ruckus and make our voice heard."
